Spreading Rumors and Lies

"Hanin, who is in the ninth grade, noticed that all her friends were keeping away from her and her classmates were casting suspicious glances at her and whispering behind her back. She tried to understand what was going on and why they were treating her like that. She asked her best friend who told her that there was a rumor in school that she had stolen a gold chain from one of the girls. Hanin burst into tears and did not know what to do and how to act. In the end she turned to her teacher, told her about the rumors and claimed that someone wanted to slander her and she did not know why. The teacher asked Hanin to calm down and restrain herself until the matter was clarified and the truth revealed. If she was sure she had done nothing wrong, she should ignore the rumors.

The teacher summoned the girl who claimed that Hanin had stolen from her, and the girl told her that during a sports lesson she had suddenly discovered that the chain was missing from her bag. The teacher asked her where the bag had been left and she replied that it had been in the school courtyard under the pomegranate tree. The teacher asked her to accompany her on a search under the tree but the girl objected and said she had looked there and found nothing. She again accused Hanin. Now the teacher began to suspect that something was wrong. She questioned the girl thoroughly and several of her girlfriends as well and soon discovered the truth: the accuser was infatuated with one of the boys in the class who was Hanin's boyfriend, and she was jealous. She wanted to take revenge on Hanin and persuade everyone, including the boy, to keep away from her, by spreading rumors.

The teacher reprimanded the girl, summoned Hanin and told her that the truth had been revealed and that she was innocent. She told the two girls that when there is faith in Allah, the truth will always emerge, as the Quran writes: "That He might justify Truth and prove Falsehood false, distasteful though it be to those in guilt"."

-What can we say to someone who spreads false rumors?. Retrieved January 17, 2009, from quranet.net Web site: http://www.quranet.net/en-quranet/27-chapter-4/465-what-can-we-say-to-someone-who-spreads-false-rumors.html

Everyone knows not to spread rumors or lie about things, but yet people still do. By these lies and rumors, people get hurt, people get the wrong idea of other people, and worse at times. Backbiting and lying or some of the major sins that Allah (swt) told us not to do. So next time, let's try our best not to say false lines.
